A New Home for Paddling History in Bellefonte
Located in an 1859 freight building in historic Talleyrand Park along Spring Creek, the Dave Kurtz Kayak & Canoe Museum celebrates the story of kayaking and canoeing in Centre County. The museum grew from Dave Kurtz’s vision and features dozens of vintage kayaks and canoes, including boats from his own collection as well as others donated to the effort.
Still in the early stages of development, the museum promises to become a unique destination for visitors interested in local history, outdoor recreation, and the evolution of paddling in Central Pennsylvania.
A Museum in Progress
The Dave Kurtz Kayak & Canoe Museum is more than a display of historic watercraft. It is an effort to preserve and share the region’s connection to paddling, recreation, and life along the water. Set inside one of Bellefonte’s most distinctive historic buildings, the museum brings together the community’s appreciation for heritage, architecture, and the outdoors.
As the project continues to grow, volunteers, sponsors, and donors are needed to help bring the full vision to life.
Why It Matters
The Dave Kurtz Kayak & Canoe Museum reflects BHCA’s commitment to preserving Bellefonte’s historic places while creating new ways for residents and visitors to connect with the town’s culture and landscape. By pairing a restored freight building with the story of paddling in Centre County, the museum offers a fresh way to experience Bellefonte’s past and present.
